The impact of that recycling may not have been as well known a century ago, but we do know now how much it helps improve our environment and how it contributes to the sustainability of our future. Here are just some of the ways recycling benefits the planet:

Almost 40% of the world’s steel production is made from scrap.
Of an estimated total of 700 million tonnes of aluminum produced since commercial manufacturing began in the 1880s, about 75% of this is still being used as secondary raw material today.
Recycling steel uses 75% less energy compared to creating steel from raw materials - enough to power 18 million homes!
CO2 emissions are reduced by 58% through the use of ferrous scrap.
Recycling copper saves up to 85% of the energy used in primary production.
The energy saved by recycling one tonne of aluminum is more than enough to power a household for a whole year (The average household uses about 10,000 kWh year).
Almost 40% of the world’s demand for copper is met using recycled material.
Recycling one tonne of steel saves 642 kWh of energy, 1.8 barrels (287 liters) of oil, 10.9 million BTU's of energy and 2.3 cubic meters of landfill space.
One tonne of recycled aluminum saves up to 8 tonnes of bauxite, 14,000 kWh of energy, 40 barrels (6300 liters) of oil, 238 million Btu's of energy and 7.6 cubic meters of landfill.
Recycling aluminum uses 95% less energy than producing aluminum using raw materials.
Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to power a 100-watt bulb for almost four hours.
The aluminum drink can is the world's most recycled container - more than 63% of all cans are recycled worldwide.
By using copper scrap, we reduce CO2 emissions by 65%

Sustainability and consumption are often two words that have often found themselves paired together. We all have to adapt at one point or another, although industries like ours tend to have to adapt quicker, and sometimes instantly to the new laws and regulations...
