Joseph & Company traces it roots back to 1880, when John Lewis established his business as a second-hand dealer from his premises on Victoria St. N. by Ellen St.  By 1907, his wife was running a second-hand store at 104-6 Kind St. E. (corner of Queen and King today in downtown Kitchener).  This business was then purchased in 1910 by Barney Joseph, who had recently emigrated from Poland and continued the operation from the Victoria St. N. location.

A visionary entrepreneur, Barney laid the foundation for the future success of Joseph & Company, expanding its recycling business.  This growth required additional help and Barney’s brother Isaac and cousin Isadore Norris joined in the 1930’s, eventually purchasing the company from Barney in 1943.  After Isaac’s untimely death a year later, his sons joined, Alex joining in 1945 and after their service in the second world war, Ben and David followed.

With a solid management team in place, Joseph & Company experienced tremendous success and growth from the 1940’s to the early 1980’s.  The business was expanded from our Victoria St. location with the acquisition of our ferrous yard on Lancaster St. (which at that time was operated as an Auto Wrecking recycler) and our maintenance facility on Breithaupt St. (which at that point would have been warehousing and storage).  In addition to our ferrous and non-ferrous recycling, Joseph & Company was a major recycler of paper and boxes, bones, glove leather and wool.  Our business reflected the recycling needs of our community.

As the early 1980’s approached, a new generation of leaders emerged, with Isaac’s son Max entering the leadership role and David Tsarfati, his cousin, handling the operational management of the company.  During this time, Joseph & Company’s growth centred on its commitment to commercial accounts recycling services as the region’s industrial base grew.  The company further diversified their service offerings as it expanded its solid waste recycling programs.  As the 2000’s approached, there were very few parts of the region that did not have a red bin supporting their recycling program.

Our current generation of leadership emerged in the early 2000’s when David’s son Amichai entered the business in a leadership role.  Having ‘grown up’ in the business, he has been able to transition the business to meet the modern recycling needs of our customers while keeping the values that have made Joseph & Company the recycler of choice in the Region.  Supported by Ken Norris, his cousin and brothers Efraim and Aaron, the company’s management team has the diversity and depth to spearhead Joseph & Company’s future chapters!

Our Team

Amichai Tsarfati

Vice-President/General Manager

Amichai scrapped a career in financial services for a career in scrap.  His experience with both ‘Main Street’ and ‘Bay Street’ ensures that he brings our customers value, integrity and a commitment to service.

His commitment to his business is matched by his commitment to his community, as an active Rotarian and his involvement with many local not for profits.  When he’s not negotiating with the mills, he’s negotiating play time with his children.

Paul Richards

Ferrous Manager

Paul’s relaxed approach to managing our dynamic ferrous operations is evident immediately when one observes the cranes pulling loads apart.

He ensures consistent quality is delivered to the mills all the while ensuring that value is given to our suppliers.  When Paul’s steady hands are not on the crane’s controls he is busy with his family and their many adventures.

Aaron Tsarfati

Account Consultant

Aaron’s smile and laugh are the first things that you will notice when you meet him at our non-ferrous yard.  His ability to bring a fresh perspective to managing our non-ferrous operations will immediately impress you as much as his approach to making sure that all stakeholders are winners when working with him.

When Aaron isn’t shearing copper, he is supporting community projects and enjoys cheering for the Colorado Avalanche.

Efraim Tsarfati

Business Manager

Efraim’s ability to approach unique challenges with innovative solutions ensures that our customers are always getting the best value when working with our team.

His attention to detail ensures that our recycling solutions for your business will not only meet your budget and requirements but most importantly your expectations.  When Efraim computer is turned off he’s enjoying the music scene and jamming on his Fender Telecaster.

Max Norris

President Emeritus

Max’s experience in recycling and commodities trading dates back to his time in diapers.  With over 80 years of experience in the industry, he is truly a grandfather of recycling in the Waterloo Region.

His passion for his business is only matched by his commitment to his community, being involved with the Optimist’s and other local and international charities.  Although he has hung up his goalie pads several years back, he is active supporter of KW old timers and the Kitchener Rangers.

Rich Leconte

Account Consultant

Coming from a background in media buying, Richard is always concerned with making sure your current solution is getting the most bang for your buck. His approach has always been to listen to the customer’s needs and ask, “How can we do better?” For him, a lead isn’t just a potential sale, it’s a person who needs help solving a problem.

When he isn’t angling for your scrap, he’s angling for fish! An avid fisherman, most weekends you will find him in his boat or relaxing by body of water casting a line.
