History

Joseph & Company traces it roots back to 1880, when John Lewis established his business as a second-hand dealer from his house on Victoria St. N. by Ellen St.  By 1907, his wife was running a second-hand store at 104-6 Kind St. E. (corner of Queen and King today in downtown Kitchener).  This business was then purchased in 1910 by Barney Joseph, who had recently emigrated from Poland and continued the operation from the Victoria St. N. location.

A visionary entrepreneur, Barney laid the foundation for the future success of Joseph & Company, expanding its recycling business.  This growth required additional help and Barney’s brother, Isaac, and cousin, Isadore Norris, joined in the 1930’s, eventually purchasing the company from Barney in 1943.  After Isaac’s untimely death a year later, his sons, Alex, Ben, and David joined in 1945 after their service in the second world war.

With a solid management team in place, Joseph & Company experienced tremendous success and growth from the 1940’s to the early 1980’s.  The business was expanded from our Victoria St. location with the acquisition of our ferrous yard on Lancaster St. (which at that time was operated as an Auto Wrecking recycler) and our maintenance facility on Breithaupt St. (which at that point would have been warehousing and storage).  In addition to our ferrous and non-ferrous recycling, Joseph & Company was a major recycler of paper and boxes, bones, glove leather and wool.  Our business reflected the recycling needs of our community.

As the early 1980’s approached, a new generation of leaders emerged with Isadore’s son, Max, entering the leadership role and David Tsarfati, his cousin, handling the operational management of the company.  During this time, Joseph & Company’s growth centred on its commitment to helping our region's growing industrial base create value with their recycling programs.  The company further diversified their service offerings as it expanded its solid waste recycling programs.  As the 2000’s approached, there were very few parts of the region that did not have a red bin supporting their recycling program.

Our current generation of leadership emerged in the early 2000’s when David’s son Amichai entered the business in a leadership role.  Having ‘grown up’ in the business, he has been able to transition the business to meet the modern recycling needs of our customers while keeping the values that have made Joseph & Company the recycler of choice in the Region.  Supported by his vision and deep commitment to bringing customers the best value for their scrap metal, Joseph and Company has the diversity and depth to spearhead the Waterloo region's metal recycling needs today!

Amichai Tsarfati

Vice-President/General Manager

Amichai scrapped a career in financial services for a career in scrap.  His experience with both ‘Main Street’ and ‘Bay Street’ ensures that he brings our customers value, integrity and a commitment to service.

His commitment to his business is matched by his commitment to his community, as an active Rotarian and his involvement with many local not for profits.  When he’s not negotiating with the mills, he’s negotiating play time with his children.

David Tsarfati

Vice-President Operations

David’s ingenuity and ‘can do’ attitude ensures that we always have a solution for our customer’s needs.  With over 30 years in the business, there isn’t a lot that he hasn’t seen and is always ready to help.

In addition to being a leader at Joseph & Company, he lends his energy to many local and international charities and non-for-profit organizations.  When David is not crunching steel, he is busy playing with his grandchildren and traveling with his wife.

Ferrous Manager

Paul’s relaxed approach to managing our dynamic ferrous operations is evident immediately when one observes the cranes pulling loads apart.

He ensures consistent quality is delivered to the mills all the while ensuring that value is given to our suppliers.  When Paul’s steady hands are not on the crane’s controls he is busy with his family and their many adventures.
